1.  STAY UP TO DATE Make sure all of your devices are running on the latest software version or operating system. Older versions may contain vulnerabilities that are more prone to attack, so always make sure you are up to date!

2.   SECURITY SOFTWARE Your business should use a comprehensive anti-virus/ anti-malware/ransomeware suite that comes from a reputable source and is regularly updated.

3.   UTILIZE A VPN CONNECTION A Virtual Private Network is a direct, secure tunnel that allows you to access your business network away from your office safely, without compromising important information.

3 TIPS FOR OPTIMIZING YOUR STREAMING EXPERIENCE

  1. Check your connection: are you wired or wireless? If you are connected via Wi-Fi, that leaves more
    room for interference. If you are able to connect directly with an Ethernet cable, we recommend going
    that way.
  2. Do a speed test: If your device is directly plugged in with an Ethernet cable, you should be close to your subscribed speed. If you are connected via Wi-Fi, you should be at around 80% of your subscribed speed. If you are not reaching those speeds — give us a call!
  3. Router placement: Make sure your router is located centrally within your home. This way, any devices
    that are trying to connect over Wi-Fi should get a decent signal. If you still seem to have a slow
    connection or buffering, check the age of your router. If it is more than three years old, we recommend
    replacing the router (or ask us about our Managed Wi-Fi!).

WHAT IS SPYWARE, ADWARE, AND MALWARE?

Spyware is basically any technology that helps gather information about a computer user without their knowledge. Adware is any software with banner advertisements displayed while it is running. Malware is any software that is harmful to a computer user, such as a virus or spyware.

Invasion of privacy is not the only harm these can do. Some spyware and adware are classified as malware because they alter the files used for connecting to the Internet in an unwanted way. This change causes the operating system to process more information about what the malware wants rather then what the user wants. As a result, the Internet access will seem slow or disconnected, or so many pop-ups will spawn that the Internet or computer is unusable.

Rural Development Finance Corporation Awards Grants in Dakota Central’s Service Area

Dakota Central Telecommunications Cooperative is a member of the Rural Development Finance Corporation (RDFC). As a result, communities in our service area were eligible to apply for a grant of up to $2,000 for community-based projects. RDFC is making these funds available in order that more people become aware of their larger loan program that funds community-based projects and non-profit entities with low interest loans.

 

RDFC has recently granted $1,000 to the Carrington Youth Center. The Youth Center provides an after-school gathering space for youth, as well as a movie theater for all ages. Grant funds will be used to renovate the back room to include a custom designed play area for preschool aged children in the community.

 

Another $1,000 grant went to the Cathay Fire Department. Grant funds will be used to help update the aging PPE equipment, as some equipment is over 20 years old.

Dakota Central Awards $5,500 in Scholarships

Dakota Central is proud to announce the 2021 Dakota Central
Scholarship winners! Five $1,000 scholarships have been awarded to outstanding
graduating seniors whose parents or guardians are customers of Dakota Central.
The Jerry Eissinger Memorial Scholarship of $500 has been awarded to the top
scoring applicant, in addition to the $1,000 Dakota Central Scholarship.

Applicants were judged on community activities, school
activities, financial need, grades and achievement.  Consideration was also given to those looking
to pursue a career in the telecommunications or technology industry, as well as
those looking to return to a rural area after college. 

This marks the 22nd year of the scholarship
program having awarded over $105,000 to date. 
Dakota Central is proud to offer the scholarship program to show its
commitment to area youth.

Affordable Connectivity Program

Family Technology

The Affordable Connectivity Program is a Federal Communications Commission program that helps connect families and households struggling to afford internet service.  This new benefit  provides a discount of up to $30 per month toward broadband service for eligible households.

Eligible households can enroll through Dakota Central or directly with the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) at http://acpbenefit.org/.

As the number of comprised e-mail accounts continues to rise, we have implemented new password requirements for daktel.com e-mail users. Longer, stronger passwords are harder for hackers to crack, making your account more secure. Going forward, passwords must include the following:

  • 16 characters
  • 1 capital letter
  • 1 special character
  • 1 number

You are not required to change your current password at this time, but we strongly suggest doing so to prevent your account from being hacked.

Business Spotlight: The Lodge, Jamestown

The Lodge Jamestown

It’s mysterious. Grand. Historic. Unique. There are many words used to describe the 18,000 square foot landmark located on the corner of First Avenue and Third Street in downtown Jamestown. What used to be The Masonic Lodge and social club, is now in the renovation process. The 100 year old, full of character landmark owned by Joel and Barbara Onsurez will soon be shared with the community. The Lodge will be an event venue for things like weddings, corporate events, fundraisers and parties.

The building itself was never something the Onsurezs planned to pursue, but was meant to be nonetheless. When the building came up for auction, and Joel attended out of curiosity without intention to bid. The future of the building wasn’t looking promising, so Joel and Barbara ended up purchasing the building to save it from destruction. After purchasing they planned to make it their home, but received so much interest from the community they decided to preserve the history and create a space that the whole community could enjoy. Joel explained it had always been a mystery as to what was inside the building. This was not only due to the privacy from the stained glass windows, but also because in the past, only those that belonged to the Masons were allowed in. “We saw an  opportunity to invite others to come in and enjoy the history and uniqueness of the architecture.”

While it has been a rewarding journey for the Onsurezs, it hasn’t come without obstacles. “From the beginning we have run into many unexpected challenges,” Joel said. From water in the basement to determining the most efficient heat source, they have had to get creative and do some problem solving. Fortunately, things have had their way of working themselves out and many things have ended up being a blessing in disguise.

Part of the challenge has been preserving the history of the building according to the time period of the early 1900s. They have intentionally used pieces throughout the building that are representative of the time, and have incorporated many authentic relics from all over the world like light fixtures and furniture. However, there is a juxtaposition between the historic ambiance and modern technology at The Lodge. Because it’s such a large space, Joel has integrated technology and automated everything in the building, including the lights, security cameras and multiple fireplaces- the main heat source. “It makes everything much easier to manage,” Joel explained. With everything connected to their Dakota Central Small Business Managed Wi-Fi network, it gives them complete control over their devices. Being connected is key for Joel and Barbara, especially when out of town or working at their other business downtown, Babb’s Coffee House. “Someday this will be a story for Apple,” Joel said. “Technology makes it all happen.” Everything related to project management at The Lodge or other business is kept track of digitally and synced across all their devices.

Because they rely on all devices being connected all the time at The Lodge, having a local service provider is important. “If I were to call a national company, they don’t always understand the issue and don’t necessarily care about my business,” Joel stated. “Local businesses get it; they understand the value of business-to-business within our community.

Renovation is still underway, with a goal of being ready for events by this summer. Not many people would take on a project of this size, but the Onsurezs believe the work will be worth it. The way they see it, it’s a way to preserve a historical landmark while giving back and sharing a piece of history with the community. Business Spotlight: University Of Jamestown

Whether you still call it Jamestown College with nostalgia or have embraced it as the University of Jamestown, one thing we all agree on is that the institution is a pillar of our community. The leaders of the University of Jamestown have always had an excellent vision for the future of the university, which includes being on the forefront of innovation and providing students the highest quality education. Much has evolved over the years, including the need for reliable broadband in education.

The University of Jamestown’s IT staff has worked closely with Dakota Central’s Network Technicians over the years to create a very complex network. As technology has changed, Dakota Central has ensured the equipment feeding the
university’s network has stayed up to date. This has proven to be effective, as the University of Jamestown recently became Dakota Central’s first 10 Gig internet customer, and one of the few institutions in the state to be connected at that level.

“Because all the back-end equipment was in place, it was easy to bump the bandwidth to 10 Gig symmetrical from their previous 1 Gig,” said John Cunningham, Dakota Central’s Chief Network Officer. For those not as familiar with technical jargon, “symmetrical” means that download and upload speeds are the same, so 10 Gigabits per second upload by 10 Gigabits per second download, in this case. Many students these days don’t have cable TV; instead, they subscribe to streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and other app-based services. Much of their education happens online as well, meaning virtually all of their activity happens over the Internet. “Overall, user experience will improve whether it be for education or entertainment,” said Chris Hoke, Chief Information Officer.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced everyone to adapt quickly and utilize the technology available, requiring flexibility from students and faculty alike. Some of the practices implemented during the pandemic, like Lecture Capture, have continued into this year. The UJ eSports team quickly came up in discussion about the benefits of 10 Gig.

“If anyone will test the bandwidth it will be them,” Hoke said. “A reliable connection is essential; their internet connection means win or lose.”

University of Jamestown eSports

The eSports players are always the first to notice latency, if there is any. Hoke explained how an improvement was made to the network recently and the players immediately noticed a reduction in drop rates and improvement in latency, down to
the millisecond. The benefits of 10 Gig service will also be seen with live broadcasts of sporting events in the Newman Arena and the new Charlotte and Gordon Hanson Stadium. Many people have gotten used to watching sports live, whether on TV or online. Aside from the fresh popcorn, excitement in the crowd, and the level of noise, watching a game live at home is almost as good as being there in person!

With all the complexities in the university’s network, sometimes it takes a little extra support to keep things up and running at all times. “We see a tremendous value in having a local service provider,” Hoke said. “It helps to know exactly who to call. Rod knows our network just as well as I do, and we appreciate his expertise. It also helps that he is willing to crawl through tunnels and cobwebs for me.”
